Saturday 25th June was President’s Day at Dunfanaghy Golf Club. Up to 2022, wider golf rules dictated that golf clubs should have separate events for ladies and gentleman. Happily, a more enlightened directive has appeared and under the One Club, President’s Day is now a gender-neutral event. Congratulations to Tony McGilloway on this special and historic day.
It was unfortunate that the weather did not appear to be aware that history was being made, as those who teed off around lunchtime were subjected to deluges of biblical proportions and gusting winds of over 40 kmph. Despite the inclement conditions, more than 100 players pegged up to try and win this prestigious title. Each President is allowed to dictate the format for the day and Tony’s choice was well considered. He opted for 18 holes Stableford on Saturday with the top 20, and those tied for 20th position, going through to qualify for another 18 holes on Sunday, with accumulated points over the 2 days deciding the winner. After the first 18 holes, Bobby Carey led the field with Aidan Fox on 39pts. Tucked in behind was Paddy McMullan on 38, ahead of a number of players on 36 points. 27 players qualified for Sunday’s play-off and it was great to see all sections of the club represented - Barbara Eakin and Mary Lafferty represented the ladies, Carlos and Edward O’Reilly and Tom McClintock, the youth membership and Nigel Doherty, Brian Dolan, Michael Kelly and Dan Devine, past Captains, Presidents and Committee members. Although Sunday morning initially looked unpromising, the conditions in the afternoon fortunately turned out to be much more benign than Saturday and Bobby Carey consolidated his position at the top of the leader board. He was crowned champion with a magnificent 74 points. At the presentation of prizes on Sunday evening, Tony spoke eloquently and thanked the players, his friends, the ground staff, Ger Dalton for officiating, Ryan, Ciara the staff of the 19th Bar and Bistro for the exceptional food and service.
