As the junior golfing season draws to a close, the prize giving for the Paul McGinley Cup took place on Sunday evening after Dunfanaghy’s exciting win in the Donegal Youth Match play. The Paul McGinley Cup is Dunfanaghy’s junior match play competition. Due to the large entry this season, a cadets section was contested running alongside the main draw. Thanks goes to Mick McGinley who very kindly presented the boys with their trophies and medals after sharing some very wise words of advice with them. Special thanks must go to the people who give freely of their time and energy throughout the year making junior golf in Dunfanaghy so vibrant – James Sweeney Snr, Paul Kelly, Jonny McClintock, not forgetting the unsung Saturday morning double act of Brian Dolan and Daniel McColgan – Thank you! Paul McGinley Cup Winner - James T Sweeney Runner up - Carlos O'Reilly Paul McGinley Plate Winner - Ben Smyth Runner up - Michael Dolan Cadets Competition Winner - Niall Moore Runner up - Jack Druce Donegal Youth Champions 2019
Dunfanaghy retained the Donegal Youth Matchplay Championship on a thrilling Sunday of golf against Ballybofey and Stranorlar. Trailing 3-0 and by 9 holes from Saturdays away leg at Ballybofey, the boys knew they had a huge job ahead of them to retain the cup. Leading from the front the Ulster Interprovincial players Darcy Hogg and Luke Kelly played some superb golf, shooting 9 birdies between them, to close out match No.1 4&3. The match No.3 pairing of Tom McClintock and Lucas Wood played great golf to close out their match 5&4. With 2 matches in and holes even it was left to the pairing of James T Sweeney and Conor Hanna to try to get the crucial win. A great eagle from Conor on the 10th was the turning point in a very tight match. They were able to hold onto their slim lead down the stretch, closing it out on the 17th to clinch the tightest of wins. Team captain James Sweeney Snr was delighted with the performance of his team, but also paid tribute to the young and talented Ballybofey team. The match was played in the upmost sportsmanship and friendship, and was a great advertisement for youth golf in Donegal. Congratulations to this amazing group of talented boys. Gents Club Stableford

We would like to thank all those who helped to make the Caravaners a most successful event. A special thank you to those who very generously sponsored tees, and to those, known and anonymous, who donated money and prizes. The quiz was kindly hosted by Jim Moore. It was most enjoyable, but poorly supported. Next year ‘we must do better’! Thanks to the juveniles for looking after the putting competition which, along with the quiz and raffle, raised €360 towards the €800 donation to the Donegal Mental Health Services charity. Thank you to Bernie O’Neill for attending the presentation and thank you and your colleagues for your most important work. A balance of over €4000 was raised and, as previously stated, there will be a substantial contribution towards a course improvement initiative, and this will be determined after further discussion. We are pleased to say that next year’s Caravaners will be organised by Graham and Natalie Cummings and Mark Caithness Thank you all, and we hope this traditional ‘end of summer’ competition continues to thrive and be enjoyed.
