Dear Members
President Keith would like to thank everyone who contributed to his chosen charity on his President's Day last Saturday. The sum total of €639 was raised for Cancer Care West. A presentation of the cheque will be made to Nick Edmunds on his next visit to Dunfanaghy. President's Day at Dunfanaghy Golf Club On Saturday 24th June President Keith Lapsley held his President's Day in Dunfanaghy. This year the competition took the format of an 18 hole Stableford Competition with a nine hole playoff to decide the winner. After 18 holes the top 10 scores (and ties) along with the 2 best gross scores went back out again to battle it out over another 9 holes (the first, third and 12 to 18) The weather conditions were dry but the strong winds were making playing conditions very difficult. Even putting was was a challenge as the ball was blowing off line easily. Hence the scoring was much lower than expected. However the turnout for President Keith was excellent and a large field headed off for the first part of the day. It has to be mentioned Frank Kelly took the nearest the pin prize on the tricky 9th into a howling gale and David Johnston had the longest drive on the 18th hole. His drive was only inches from the green. The leader after the first 18 holes in the clubhouse was Cornelius McMullan with 38 points. Three followed on 37 points - Marc Howard, Sean Grant and Danny Sweeney. Sean Duffy Jnr also had 37 points, but as a student member he didn't qualify for the shootout. There were a few on 36 points - Nigel Doherty, Liam McBride, Eamonn Hunter and Willie Irvine with a couple of 35 points. The average score for the rest of the field was around 28 points which gives an indication of the effects of the wind on the day. Favourites heading out in the playoff would have been Cornelius McMullan clubhouse leader and Danny Sweeney last year's winner. However, playoffs sometimes yield strange results with an added emphasis on who can handle the pressure best and stay focused on the day with a little bit of luck thrown in. The best score in the 9 hole playoff was Nigel Doherty with 22 points, next Frank Kelly 19 pts, Anthony Gallagher and Cornelius McMullan had 18 pts and Liam McBride had 17 pts. These were the significant scores in the playoff, when added to the original 18 holes score the prize winners were decided by small margins. Nigel Doherty prevailed to capture the President's Prize with a score of 58 pts, followed by Cornelius McMullan on 56 pts, Anthony Gallagher on 55 pts, Frank Kelly on 54 pts and Liam McBride on 53 pts. After the prize giving, the entertainment started and this saw our President Keith in fine voice as he started off the karaoke for the night with some deciding around 1.30am that it was time for bed! Many thanks President Keith for a good day. This Friday 30th June is the Bernard Hanlon 3 club challenge and on Saturday 1st July it's a Gents Open Stableford. The Dunfanaghy Golf Club Pro-Am 2017 was played over the weekend of the 10th and 11th June. 51 professional golfers and teams competed over 2 days for the prizes. Strong winds were a feature of the weekend with some liquid sunshine thrown in on Sunday for good measure. Under these conditions with the course baring its teeth scoring was difficult for pros and amateurs alike. David Higgins from Waterville came out on top for the pros and Ted Higgins lead Peter Sullivan's team to 1st place. Dunfanaghy Golf Club would like to thank everyone who has worked incredibly hard to make the Pro-Am a roaring success. See you all next year! Professionals
