An Awards Ceremony was held on the Sunday afternoon of the the Bank Holiday weekend to mark the culmination of the Paul McGinley competition, which has been running over the past 2 seasons, despite the restrictions brought about by the pandemic. James Sweeney, who presided over the event, spoke eloquently, thanking Paul McGinley for his generous sponsorship and paying tribute, not only to the tireless work of Brian Dolan and Daniel McColgan but also to Seamus McMonagle, who has offered support and encouragement to our juniors through his coaching programme and his wise words. James also referenced the wider membership for their kindness, understanding and support, without which the junior section would not be able to thrive.
The successes of Luke Kelly, James T Sweeney, Darcy and Evan Hogg have been well documented over the last couple of months, and it is hoped that, through them and other promising players rising through the ranks, the club will continue to boast Interprovincial and National champions and panel members in Ulster and Ireland age group categories. Captain Bill and Lady Captain Paula McCallion were called upon to present trophies for the Cup, Plate, Intermediate and Cadet competitions. The winners were Cormac Gill, Lorcan Hogg, Niall Moore, Caolon McFadden, Hugh Burke and Max Roarty, with James T Sweeney the overall winner for the 2020 season. James T Sweeney was aiming for an impressive 3 in a row, but with little respect for titles or reputations, the final was contested by Lucas Wood and Rory Kelly. In a tussle reminiscent of “the duel in the sun”, Rory went 1 up with 2 to play, before Lucas struck back with back-to-back birdies to clinch the coveted Paul McGinley Cup for 2021.
