Dear Members
We would like to thank you all for the enormous support you have given the club over the summer. Both ladies’ and gents' committees continue to work hard behind the scenes to ensure the survival and success of Dunfanaghy GC. With your support we are weathering the storm. We have had the busiest Open Week for years. Many many players commented on the excellent condition of the course. This is a great credit to green-keeper Paul who, assisted by Robert & Rory, have kept the course in fantastic shape despite their limited budget. With significantly increased numbers playing, Ruth was flat out in the shop and competition secretaries Siobhan Bogues and Sean Quinn certainly had their work cut out. Emma and Ailish pulled more pints during open week than they had all year. We thank them all sincerely for their efforts. We are also indebted to our Open Week sponsors O’Hara & Harrison Electrical, John & Cheryl Chambers, Hickey Clarke & Langan, Shandon Hotel, Pauline & Patrick Hunter, Charles Roarty, Vice Captain Colm Donaghy, Moore’s Holiday Homes, Mick McGinley and Boyce Centra for their generosity. This Saturday is the annual Caravanners’ Classic - historically an opportunity for caravan and holiday home owners to give something back to the club and also raise money for charity. We are grateful to Graham & Natalie for agreeing to organise this year’s event in the current circumstances and we wish them every success. The nominated charities this year are Pieta House, a mental health charity based in Letterkenny and Tidy Towns Association, Dunfanaghy. So please bring €5 with you to the 9th where you will have a chance to win a lady's or gent’s golf bag for nearest the pin or the latest Srixon G Star Tour balls (courtesy of the Captain!) if you land within the circle. You may also be interested in a charity golf matchplay event organised by “CAUSE” - a mental health charity based in Northern Ireland. https://www.cause.org.uk/matchplay-for-mental-health-2020 Finally, we have 3 “house-keeping” issues for your information: 1. given that implementation of the Government’s Phase 4 has been deferred, we can only offer a bar service if we are providing food. Unfortunately the excellent gourmet take-away service provided by John & Amanda Quinn will only be available at week-ends so we apologise that we cannot open the bar Monday to Friday. 2. we need used golf balls for the shop so please gather up any old balls you are unlikely to use, give them a quick scrub, and leave them in with Ruth or Mary. 3. we would like to clarify a local rule regarding holding (retracting) the flag-stick with your putter while another player putts. This is to prevent the ball unfairly striking the thickened flagstick, particularly if the flagstick is leaning towards you. This local rule is entirely within the ethos of fair play, complies with Covid19 precautions and is supported by the GUI. We hope you will continue to enjoy what is left of the summer and good luck to those participating in “Caravanners”. with kind regards Bill & Paula Captain & Lady Captain Comments are closed.
